asked the Minister for the Environment if he is aware of an initiative undertaken some time ago by an insurance company (details supplied) which involves the utilisation by motorists of a car insurance disc on the windscreens of insured vehicles; and if he will exhort other insurance companies to follow this particular example; and whether he will consider giving that initiative some degree of mandatory or formal status or support.

I am so aware. This general question was examined by the Committee of Inquiry into the cost and methods of providing motor insurance. The committee, whose report was published earlier this year, recommended against an additional requirement on these lines for the reasons set out in their report. The recommendations of the committee are at present being examined by the Departments concerned.
