Vol. 344 No. 8

Written Answers. - Telephone Service.

623.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs the action being taken to correct the telecommunications breakdown which has affected the Galway exchange area (091) over the past week; and if he will make a statement on the cause of the telephone difficulties.

624.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he will make a statement on the continuing appalling telephone service in Galway city and county with particular reference to the breakdown of service last week.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 623 and 624 together.

There were two abnormal disruptions to telephone service in the Galway area during the week commencing Monday, 20 June. The first occurred at 12 noon on 23 June when the coaxial cable from Galway to Athlone was accidentally dug up by a county council contractor. A number of circuits on this route were disrupted until 5.30 p.m. The second occurred on June 24 when a fault on power equipment in the old Galway exchange disrupted service intermittently between 8.45 a.m. and 2.30 p.m.

While the quality of service in Galway city and county is not yet satisfactory there have been improvements with the coming into service of the new trunk exchange at Mervue at the end of April last. Further improvements will follow with the bringing into service of a new radio-link between Clifden and Galway in the next few weeks and the bringing into service shortly of a new 1800 circuit radio link between Galway and Dublin. Other measures include the progressive transfer over the next nine months or so of the exchanges at Oranmore, Kilcolgan, Claregalway, Turloughmore, Corrandulla, Inverin, Carraroe to the trunk exchange at Mervue and the conversion of the remaining manual exchanges in County Galway to automatic working.

625.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs when a telephone service will be provided for a person (details supplied) in Dublin 5.

I understand fully the frustration felt at the delay in providing telephones, Regrettably, however, it will not be possible to meet this application until necessary additional engineering work is carried out.

The objective of the Department's current telephone development programme is to provide a fully satisfactory telephone service nationally in terms of both quality and availability by the end of 1984 and it is expected that service will be provided for the person named within about a year.
