Vol. 344 No. 9

Written Answers. - Celtic Sea Fishery.

415.

asked the Minister for Fisheries and Forestry the quantity of herring taken since the extended opening of the Celtic Sea fishery; the value of the catches; and how they were disposed of.

The total quantity of herring taken in the area between Courtown Harbour, County Wexford and Loop Head, County Clare, from 1 October 1982 to 31 March 1983 by Irish registered vessels amounted to 10,288 tonnes valued at £1,753,198. 8,338 tonnes valued at IR£1,573,044 were sold for human consumption. The remainder was withdrawn from the market under the EEC intervention scheme.

I am informed by the EEC Commission that the other member states which were allocated quotas for herring in the Celtic Sea did not fish there during the specified period.
