Vol. 344 No. 9

Written Answers. - Free Transport for OAPs.

450.

asked the Minister for Transport if he will ensure that all private bus operators will be obliged to provide transport for old age pensioners and all others who are entitled to free travel on routes on which the private bus operators operate; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

It is assumed that the Deputy is referring to scheduled road passenger services operated under licences issued in accordance with the Road Transport Act, 1932. These licences authorise the holder to operate scheduled services over specified routes in accordance with an approved timetable and at fixed maximum fare levels.

The question of participation in the State schemes for providing free transport for old age pensioners and others is a matter for agreement between the agencies responsible for administering these schemes and the licensed operators. The administration of those schemes is not a matter for which my Department are responsible. In the public interest, however, I would recommend all licensed operators to co-operate to the maximum extent possible in the schemes.
