Vol. 344 No. 9

Written Answers. - Shoe Imports.

524.

asked the Minister for Trade, Commerce and Tourism if he will investigate the licensing system under which shoes are imported to this country; if he is concerned at the present level of footwear imports; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I am satisfied that the licensing system under which shoes are imported is effective in relation to the objectives set down for it. At present there are restrictions on imports of shoes from only three sources. I note that, in reply to a question, the Minister for Industry and Energy informed the Deputy on 8 June 1983 that his Department have been trying to get the agreement of the European Commission to restricting imports from several additional third countries. If that agreement is forthcoming the licensing system will give effect to the additional restrictions.
