Vol. 344 No. 9

Written Answers. - School Grants Disparity.

125.

asked the Minister for Education if, in view of the disparity between State and religious schools, whereby the religious schools only qualify for an 85 per cent grant towards the building of a new school, she will consider increasing the grant, as the 15 per cent difference is a big burden on the local community and in many cases will prevent religious orders from attempting to build new schools; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

I am satisfied that the assistance available to secondary schools in the form of 85 per cent capital grants, together with the annual grants paid to such schools, is such as to enable the authorities of these schools to meet their commitments in the provision of new schools.
