Vol. 345 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Kerry Person's Death.

20.

asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs if he will ascertian the full circumstances concerning the death of a person (details supplied) from County Kerry who was found dead in his prison cell at Pentonville Prison on the morning of 25 July and who complained to a prison hospital officer on the previous evening of a headache and chest pains and received no attention.

I have already made inquiries through the Embassy at London. I understand that an inquest was held on 18 October. From the initial inquiries it appears that the person in question was found to have died in his sleep of natural causes. I understand that he was visited by the prison duty medical officer at about 7.30 p.m. on the evening preceding his death. He complained of symptoms that appeared to indicate indigestion and was given tablets for indigestion. I also understand that he was advised that, if the problem did not clear up, he should report to the medical staff on the following day. He was, however, found dead in the morning. I have asked for a full report of the coroner's findings.
