Vol. 345 No. 4

Written Answers. - Ballylanders (County Limerick) National School Extension.

271.

asked the Minister for Finance the reason for the delay in furnishing a report on the feasibility of having Ballylanders national school, County Limerick, extended and reconstructed; and when this report will be at hand.

In 1975 the Office of Public Works recommended to the Department of Education that a new school should be erected at Ballylanders, principally on account of the age of the existing school which was erected in the 1890s.

In December 1980 the Department of Education asked the Office of Public Works to report on the suitability of two sites which had been offered by the manager of the school. One of the sites was considered suitable but the manager of the school was unable to acquire it. In October 1981 the Office of Public Works was advised by the manager that local interests wished to retain and extend the existing school as it was conveniently situated in the town centre. The manager was advised that it would be feasible to extend the school but that a site extension would be required.

On 3 October 1983 the Department of Education sent the Office of Public Works a letter from the manager which indicated that the site extension had been purchased. The Office of Public Works will now prepare a feasibility study to determine how best the additional accommodation can be provided and will report its findings to the Department of Education as early as possible.
