Vol. 345 No. 9

Written Answers. - Telephone Service.

258.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs when a telephone service will be provided for a firm (details supplied) in Dublin 1 as they first applied on 23 October, 1980.

The firm named has telephone service at the address quoted. I am sorry that an application for service at another address cannot be met until necessary engineering work has been carried out. It is expected that this work will be completed early next year.

259.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs when a telephone service will be provided for a person (details supplied) in Dublin 12.

Service has been provided for the person named.

260.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs when a telephone service will be provided for a person (details supplied) in County Dublin.

Service has been provided at the address stated.

261.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he will consider having essential repairs (details supplied) carried out to the public telephone kiosk at Rosslare Strand, County Wexford.

Repairs to the door of the kiosk which was damaged by vandals have been carried out. The provision of light to the kiosk is being pursued with the ESB.

262.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he will arrange for the payment of six weeks' redundancy pay for each year of service to the 15 girls employed in the telephone exchange in Cahirciveen, County Kerry, when the station is automated shortly; if he will give an assurance that the staffing level will not be reduced when An Bord Telecom takes over and that An Bord Telecom will pay six weeks' pay for each year of service if the exchange is not automated before they take over.

The exchange in question is due to be converted to automatic working in the first half of 1984. At that stage there will be an initial reduction in staffing levels followed by further reductions as other manual exchanges in the area are converted to automatic working. Operator services will be provided from Tralee when the automatic conversion programme in the area is completed.

I can confirm that the terms of the agreement relating to the position of staff who are affected by the closure of manual exchanges will be open to the staff in question as the automatic conversion programme progresses, unless in the meantime a new agreement on alternative arrangements is reached with the relevant unions. The agreement provides for the payment of compensation to staff who opt to terminate their appointments at the rate of six weeks' pay per year of service subject to a minimum payment of 12 weeks' pay and a maximum payment of two years' pay.

263.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs the position regarding the proposed public telephone kiosk at Direendraugh, Blackwater Bridge PO, Killarney, County Kerry.

The provision of a public telephone kiosk at Direendraugh is not considered warranted at present and it is not proposed therefore to provide one there.
