Vol. 345 No. 11

Written Answers. - Special Foodstuffs Subsidy.

391.

asked the Minister for Health whether he will consider subsidising the special foodstuffs required for coeliac children in view of their considerable cost and of the consequent economic hardship to their parents; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Matters relating to bread subsidies are the concern of the Minister for Trade, Commerce and Tourism but it is understood that only standard bakers bread is subsidised. As Minister for Health I have no statutory role in this regard.

Assistance is, however, provided under the health services: Gluten-free foods for coeliacs are provided free of charge to those who are covered by medical cards. Persons who are not covered by medical cards may include in their claims under the refund scheme the cost of gluten-free bread or flour purchased in pharmacies.
