Vol. 345 No. 11

Written Answers. - Review of Leaving Certificate Grades.

535.

asked the Minister for Education (a) the latest date for receipt by (i) principals of second level schools and (ii) her Department of requests from leaving certificate students for review of their grades in that examination; and whether the dates are the same for all subjects; (b) the date on which her Department notified schools of the results of reviews of the history higher level leaving certificate paper, 1983; (c) whether, in the light of the fact that some reviews of that paper were sought by students wishing to achieve higher points for entry into various third level educational institutions, she considers it fair to the students and to their parents that the date at (a) was a date subsequent to the opening date of at least some, if not all, third level institutions; and (d) whether, generally, having regard to the substantial fee paid by students for the review and to the stress they are under in this situation, she will ensure that the results are made available well before the first of the third level institutions begin its autumn term in 1984.

All applications for review of leaving certificate results must be received in my Department's Examinations Branch from the school principals by a specified date which, in 1983, was 2 September.

The schools concerned were notified of the results of the reviews in history, higher level, on various dates between 28 September and 26 October 1983 as the results became available.

Every effort is made to expedite the review of results, especially in the light of entry requirements to third-level institutions. The process of having a review completed necessarily takes time, however, particularly as many of the examiners concerned will by that stage have resumed their other duties after their summer vacation period. In these circumstances it is not possible to give the undertaking requested in relation to the 1984 leaving certificate examination.
