asked the Minister for Industry and Energy if he will state in relation to the ESB's turf generating station at Deelis, Caherciveen, County Kerry, when he expects to be in a position to encourage Iveragh turf producers association to organise their members to make the necessary arrangements to hire plant and machinery for the 1984 turf cutting season for the supply of turf to the station in 1984; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The question of the supply of turf to the Deelis station in 1984 is directly related to the proposals of the ESB towards the continued use of turf-burning stations for electricity generation. No decisions to decommission any turf-burning stations have as yet been taken by the ESB but the Deputy will be aware that the ESB's Strategic Plan does propose the decommissioning of Deelis in 1984. I have the proposals in that plan under detailed examination.

The ESB are aware, of course, that any decisions which may eventually be taken to decommission a particular station would have implications for turf producers of the kind mentioned by the Deputy. The board have informed me that they will take due account of these implications.
