asked the Minister for Social Welfare the reason unemployment benefit has not been paid since January last to a person (details supplied) in County Cork even though he has sent in all the required documents.

The person concerned claimed disability benefit from 8 December 1982 to 12 January 1983. No further medical evidence was received until September 1983 when medical certificates covering period 13 January 1983 to 14 September 1983 were forwarded.

Before a decision regarding payment could be made it was necessary to investigate the claim in order to establish if the claimant has been continuously ill since January 1983. In this connection arrangements were made for an officer of my Department to investigate the claim and on receipt of his report all disability benefit due from 13 January 1983 to 21 October 1983, date of latest medical certificate received, was issued on 15 November 1983.

It was necessary to confirm details of the amount of supplementary welfare allowance advanced by the Mid-Western Health Board before payment could be issued in respect of his dependants. On receipt of this information, arrears of benefit due were issued to the claimant on 10 November 1983.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare the position in regard to an appeal made by a person (details supplied) in County Limerick against a decision by his departmental inspector.

Following an investigation of his case by a social welfare officer the person concerned was assessed with means in excess of the statutory limit by a deciding officer of the Department. Means were derived from profit from his land.

He appealed against the amount of means assessed against him and his case was referred to an appeals officer for determination. However, before deciding the case the appeals officer directed that certain details about the income of his holding be clarified and the case was referred to a social welfare supervisor for additional inquiries. The social welfare supervisor called at the applicant's residence but he was not available for interview on the occasion of his visit. The social welfare supervisor will call again on the applicant after which the case will be returned to the appeals officer for determination. His entitlement to unemployment assistance will be determined in the light of the decision of the appeals officer.
