There is no record in my Department of the receipt of an application for a mortgage subsidy from the person named. A claim for a new house grant has been received from this person and he has been requested to submit documentation in support of his application. 246.

asked the Minister for the Environment if he will arrange for the immediate payment of a home improvement grant to a person (details supplied) in County Galway.

A grant cannot be paid in this case because, contrary to a qualifying condition of the scheme, the work had commenced before an inspection of the house was carried out.

247.

asked the Minister for the Environment the reason a new house grant has not been paid to a person (details supplied) in County Roscommon; the reason for the delay; and when it will be paid.

A grant cannot be paid in this case until the defect, which was notified to the applicant on 9 November 1983 has been remedied. When my Department are notified that this work has been carried out, a further inspection with a view to payment of a grant will be arranged. There has been no delay in dealing with this case, which required detailed technical assessment as a result of the nature of the defect discovered when the completed house was inspected last July.

248.

asked the Minister for the Environment when a reconstruction grant will be paid to a person (details supplied) in County Westmeath.

This grant will be paid shortly.

249.

asked the Minister for the Environment when a £1,000 house grant will be paid to a person (details supplied) in County Dublin.

This application was received as recently as 28 October 1983. The grant will be paid when an inspection, which will be carried out as soon as possible, establishes that the house has been satisfactorily completed and occupied.

252.

asked the Minister for the Environment (1) if home improvement grants are available to tenants of local authority flat complexes and (2) if home improvement grants include assistance for the provision of central heating.

Provided the consent of the local authority is obtained, home improvement grants are available to tenants of local authority flat complexes or houses. A grant for the provision of central heating is not available under the current scheme.

The grant will be paid as soon as possible.

254.

asked the Minister for the Environment if he will set up a proper awards scheme for firemen comparable to that in existence for members of the Garda Síochána and the Defence Forces.

Fire personnel are eligible for awards under the scheme administered by a council — Comhairle na Mire Gaile — which is provided for by the Deeds of Bravery Act, 1947. Awards have been made to fire services personnel in the past and I am satisfied that the provision of a separate scheme would not be justified.

255.

asked the Minister for the Environment when a reconstruction grant will be paid to a person (details supplied) in County Cork.

A grant cannot be allowed in this case because, contrary to a qualifying condition of the scheme, the work had commenced before an inspection of the house was carried out. The applicant has been so informed.

256.
