Vol. 346 No. 2

Written Answers. - Malting Barley Acreage.

357.

Mr. Leonard

asked the Minister for Agriculture the steps he proposes to take to increase the acreage of malting barley.

It is a matter for the individual farmer, in association with his adviser, to decide as to what line of production suits him best. Prices for malting barley grown under contract are higher than those for feeding barley, and of course the barley market is supported by the intervention system for feed barley. There is already a good export trade in barley of malting quality and there are prospects of increased exports. These factors should encourage an increase in the acreage under this crop.
