I propose to take Questions Nos. 277, 278 and 280 together.
The preliminary report for the overall mid-Galway Regional Scheme, covering zones 1 to 4 inclusive, was submitted to my Department in September, 1977 and approved in principle in April 1978.
Stage 1 of the mid-Galway scheme provides headworks for the supply of water to zones 1 and 2 and is nearing completion at a cost of £1.45 million. It is intended that the distribution pipelines will be primarily laid by proposed private group water schemes, including the proposed mid-Galway group scheme for which technical documentation is at present being prepared by Galway County Council.
My Department suggested to Galway County Council that the preparation of contract documents for the zone 3 scheme might be deferred in view of the lack of major group schemes proposals and the long term nature of the proposals to augment water supplies to Athenry. However, an advance section of the zone 3 pipelines has been laid as part of Derrydonnell group water scheme. In addition, short term improvements in the Athenry water supply are being carried out under the council's small schemes programme 1983 at an estimated cost of £15,000.
There are no proposals before my Department for the preparation of contract documents for the zone 4 scheme to serve Claregalway.
