Vol. 346 No. 6

Written Answers. - 1981 Census.

346.

asked the Taoiseach the approximate date of the publication of each volume of the 1981 census; and the reasons for the delay in publishing the various volumes of the census.

The Preliminary Report of the 1981 Census of Population was published in October 1981. Volume I (Population of District Electoral Divisions, Towns and Larger Units of Area) was published in September 1982.

These were followed in April 1983 by the first of two reports giving results for a number of topics and based on an analysis of a 5 per cent sample of completed census returns. The first report covered age, marital status, principal economic status, industries and occupations. The second such report will be published later this month. It will cover aspects of household accommodation, period in which built, size, heating, water and sanitary facilities, nature of occupancy and rent of rented dwellings.

In September 1983 a County Bulletin series was introduced. Each bulletin gives provisional results for a particular county or county borough for (a) populations classified by age-group, marital status, economic activity, religion, mode of travel and distance to work and (b) dwellings classified by size and type and showing particulars of heating, water and sanitary facilities. The last of the County Bulletins was completed on 24 November, 1983. Bulletins for four of the Planning Regions were published on 1 December, 1983 and those for the remaining regions will be issued next week.

A bulletin containing the corresponding results for the State will also be issued this month. The series of bulletins will be completed with one further State Bulletin covering some additional topics. It is expected that this will be issued early in January 1984.

The publication dates of the remaining volumes of the 1981 Census Report dealing with final detailed results on a subject matter basis cannot be definitively specified. It is hoped that Volume II (age and marital status) and Volume III (composition of households and family units) will be issued during the first quarter of 1984. The remaining volumes (probably ten in number) will follow at regular intervals and it is hoped to have all detailed results printed and published by the end of 1985.

The publication schedule for a census is quite extensive and has to span a number of years. To provide earlier indications of overall results on a large number of topics the sample analysis referred to above was undertaken. Likewise the bulletin series containing provisional results had been a means of making further results available as quickly as possible at the county and county borough level.
