Vol. 346 No. 6

Written Answers. - Tuam (Galway) Water Supply.

450.

asked the Minister for Finance the amount of money spent by the Office of Public Works this year on the digging of trial bore holes to provide an alternative water supply for the town of Tuam, County Galway, so that drainage of the River Nanny can continue; the outcome of these digs; and if £250,000 will be provided in the 1984 estimates for the drainage of this river.

As indicated in the reply to the question put down by the Deputy on 4 May 1983, the Commissioners of Public Works agreed to contribute towards the cost of trial well borings to be carried out by Galway County Council to determine the feasibility of providing an alternative water supply for Tuam. While the commissioners understand that some trial boring work has been undertaken by the council, they have not received any indication of the outcome of the work nor has an application been made to them for a contribution of moneys towards any costs incurred.

As indicated also in the earlier reply, there can be no question of the allocation of funds for the drainage of the River Nanny until such time as the maintenance of the satisfactory and adequate water supply to Tuam is assured.
