Vol. 346 No. 7

Written Answers. - Drug and Medicine Imports.

395.

asked the Minister for Health the value of drugs and medicines imported which could be supplied by home manufacturers.

Most drugs and medicines used here are proprietary products available only from the manufacturers or their agents. These branded products could not be produced by Irish manufacturers.

The only drugs currently being imported which could be supplied by home manufacturers are generic drugs. It is unlikely that this market exceeds £4 million at present.

A wide range of drugs, in theory, could be replaced by generic drugs capable of manufacture by Irish companies. The value of these drugs would depend on the capacity of Irish companies to produce them and their ability to sell them.
