Vol. 346 No. 9

Written Answers. - Social Welfare Benefits.

475.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare the reason social assistance or occupational benefit was not paid to a person (details supplied) in County Galway since last April.

The person concerned was paid occupational injury benefit for a maximum period of 26 weeks from 20 June 1979 to 18 December 1979.

From 19 December 1979 his claim was treated as one to disability benefit and he was paid to 16 April 1983. Payment was disallowed after that date following examination by a medical referee who expressed the opinion that he was capable of work.

He appealed against the disallowance and was examined on 8 June 1983 by a different medical referee who also considered him to be capable of work. His case was then referred to an appeals officer who upheld the decision to disallow payment of disability benefit from 18 April 1983 to 24 August 1983, the date of the latest medical certificate before him. No medical evidence subsequent to 24 August 1983 has been received from the claimant.

476.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare when arrears of disability and pay-related benefits will be paid to a person (details supplied) in County Galway.

The person concerned has been paid all disability benefit due from 5 September 1983, fourth day of incapacity, to 26 November 1983, date of latest medical certificate received, less refund to the Western Health Board in respect of supplementary welfare allowance advanced.

The claimant is in receipt of disability benefit at the maximum rate appropriate to a married man with four dependant children.

He is not entitled to pay-related benefit as disability benefit in payment exceeds 80 per cent of his reckonable weekly earnings in 1981-82, the tax year relevant to his claim.

477.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare the reasons unemployment assistance at the maximum rate has not been paid to a person (details supplied) in County Galway; the date on which it will be paid; and the amount that will be paid.

The person concerned is at present in receipt of unemployment assistance of £42.80 weekly, being the maximum rate payable to him £58.30 less means, £15.50.

He applied for a review of the assessment of his means and the case was referred to a social welfare officer for investigation. When these inquiries are completed, his means will be reviewed in the light of the report of the social welfare officer and the rate of unemployment assistance payable to him will be determined accordingly.
