Vol. 346 No. 10

Written Answers. - Energy Projects.

179.

asked the Minister for Industry and Energy whether the Government intends to seek aid for energy projects in Ireland, including not only associated infrastructural work in connection with the possible oil discovery off the Waterford coast, but also for gas, turf, wind, wave and biomass projects which can be raised at the Athens Summit during the discussions on energy policy; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

It is Government policy to seek to benefit from Community aid available for all eligible public sector projects in the energy field.

Regarding aid for infrastructure investment related to the oil find off Waterford, it would be premature to say whether the possibility of Community aid would be relevant until further exploration and delineation of the find takes place and a clearer idea emerges of infrastructure investment that might be required.

In co-operation with the Northern Ireland authorities the Government will seek EEC aid for the construction of the natural gas pipeline to Northern Ireland.

At present, financial support for various demonstration projects on energy saving, wind research and biomass development is forthcoming from EEC sources.

The Council of Ministers is at present examining proposals for aiding the production and consumption of solid fuels, including turf. The European Council at Athens did not examine reports including energy policy which were before it.
