Vol. 346 No. 10

Written Answers. - New House Completions.

234.

asked the Minister for the Environment if his target for 30,000 new house completions will be achieved in 1983.

As explained in reply to a previous question from the Deputy on 26 January 1983, the Programme for Government includes an aim to raise housing output towards 30,000 houses a year. No specific timescale was laid down but it is the Government's aim to progress towards that objective as quickly as possible. Considering the sharp decline in housing activity and completions that had taken place in 1982, when completions fell by more than 7 per cent and the actual level of housebuilding activity by more than 12 per cent it would have been quite unrealistic to expect 30,000 completions to be achieved in the current year.
