Vol. 346 No. 10

Written Answers. - County Cork Housing Scheme.

245.

asked the Minister for the Environment if he will make money available immediately to Cork County Council for the building of eight houses at Aghada, Midleton, County Cork, as they were completely destroyed by fire on 27 November, 1983 with severe loss to seven families.

I am informed by the county council that the houses that were damaged had been purchased from them in accordance with a purchase scheme made under the Labourers Act, 1936, or under the power to sell or lease dwellings given to housing authorities under section 90 of the Housing Act, 1966.

As a first priority the county council have offered to rehouse the persons involved in a scheme of new houses which they are providing in Aghada but that only one of them has so far accepted the offer.

I understand that matters have not reached a stage at which it would be appropriate to consider whether, and for what purpose, the question of the provision of finance by my Department might arise, having regard, in particular, to the extent of the insurance cover on the houses.
