Vol. 346 No. 10

Written Answers. - House Grants.

247.

asked the Minister for the Environment the cost to the Exchequer of rent subsidies in 1980, 1981 and 1982.

Subsidisation of local authority housing arises by way of subsidisation by the Exchequer of loan charges incurred by housing authorities in the provision of houses for letting and by housing authorities of the maintenance and management costs of their housing stock. Information on the amounts of the subsidies provided in these ways are set out in a tabular statement which follows:

asked the Minister for the Environment if he will, in view of the cost of the erection of a new house consider increasing the house improvement grant for structural repairs.

I am not in a position at present, having regard to the unavoidable constraints on public expenditure, to increase the grant for structural repairs under the present scheme of house improvement grants.
