Vol. 346 No. 10

Written Answers. - Kerry Parcel Post.

364.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs the reasons the customs clearance of incoming foreign parcel post for Kerry and other areas which has always been carried out in Limerick GPO is now being transferred to Cork; if he is aware of the hardship and possible redundancies this will cause for post office staff in Limerick; and if, in the circumstances, he will continue the existing arrangement which has always worked satisfactorily.

The transfer of incoming cross-channel parcels for County Kerry from the Limerick to the Cork Customs Centre for clearance before delivery, was introduced recently as part of a programme designed to improve the parcel post service from Britain.

The new arrangement, which is working satisfactorily and achieving its objective, involves some reduction in overtime expenditure at Limerick but will not result in redundancies there. A second stage of the programme, at present under discussion with the British postal authorities, could result in the customs clearance of parcels for the Galway area being introduced at the Limerick Customs Centre.
