Vol. 346 No. 10

Written Answers. - International Youth Year.

146.

asked the Minister for Labour the preparations that have been made for the celebration of International Youth Year, 1985, in this country.

147.

asked the Minister for Labour if it is his intention to set up an International Youth Year committee in view of the urgency of the matter.

I propose to take Question Nos. 146 and 147 together.

Aprerequisite to any meaningful celebration of International Youth Year is the preparation of a national youth policy. Indeed, a central element of the United Nations Programme of Measures and Activities for International Youth Year is a request to Governments to undertake a thorough review of national policies concerning youth. To this end the Government established a National Youth Policy Committee in September to make recommendations within 12 months.

The Government have also decided to establish a national committee and advisory council to plan and co-ordinate activities in support of International Youth Year, 1985.

The National Youth Council of Ireland and other individual youth organisations have commenced preparatory work for the celebration of International Youth Year.
