Vol. 347 No. 1

Written Answers. - Public Sector Employment.

309.

asked the Minister for the Public Service (1) the number of employees in the public sector; (2) the estimated public sector pay bill in 1984; (3) the proposed reductions in the number of public sector employees in 1984; and (4) the number of new appointments in the public sector estimated for 1984 arising from new posts, vacancies etc.

The information requested is set out for the Civil Service, the Defence Forces, the Garda Síochána, teachers (including university teachers), health services' staff and the staff of non-commercial state-sponsored bodies.

On this basis the details requested are as follows:

(1) Total number of employees

187,000

(2) Estimated cost of their pay to the Exchequer

£2,200 million (a)

(3) It is estimated that total numbers serving in the public service will fall by 2,000b in 1984, even allowing for the estimated number to be recruited referred to at (4).

(4) It is estimated that some 3,000b persons will be recruited to the public service in 1984 to fill such vacancies as may be filled, under the Government's current policy on public service numbers, arising through resignations, retirements or for whatever cause.

Notes:

(a)Pay includes, for the purpose of this reply, such items of remuneration additional to basic pay, as overtime, allowances and employers' PRSI contributions. In so far as the universities and non-commercial State-sponsored bodies are concerned, the Exchequer contribution does not, of course, represent their total pay costs.

(b)These figures do not cover health services' staff as data are not yet available for 1984.
