Written Answers. - Social Welfare Benefits.

515.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare the reason unemployment assistance has not been paid to a person (details supplied) in County Galway; the weekly amount that will be paid; the total amount of arrears that will be paid; the date on which they will be paid; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The person concerned claimed unemployment assistance on 14 October 1983, and his case was referred to a social welfare officer for investigation of his means.

Following the completion of inquiries, he was assessed with means £25.00 weekly derived from the profit from land. He is accordingly entitled to unemployment assistance at £10.60 weekly, being the maximum rate payable to him £35.60 less £25.00.

He is a postal applicant and an order for encashment at his local post office is being issued to him on 19 January 1984, paying arrears due £139.57. Further weekly payments at £10.60 will follow as they become due.

The entitlement of the person concerned to unemployment assistance cannot be determined until investigations about his means have been completed. It is, however, expected that the social welfare officer will complete his inquiries shortly after which his means will be assessed and his entitlement to unemployment assistance will be determined accordingly.

In the meantime he is in receipt of weekly supplementary welfare allowance pending the outcome of his unemployment assistance application.

The unemployment assistance claim of the person concerned was disallowed on the ground that by failing to furnish details of his means he failed to show that his means did not exceed the statutory limit. He appealed against the disallowance and his case was referred to an appeals officer who assessed him with means of £34.60 derived from land.

His unemployment assistance claim was accordingly allowed at £29.15 weekly increased to £32.30 from 5 October 1983. He is a postal applicant and an order for encashment at his local post office for £257.35 representing arrears due less supplementary welfare allowance due for refund to his health board will issue on 19 January 1984. Further weekly payments will be made as they become due.
