Vol. 347 No. 1

Written Answers. - National School Boards of Management.

590.

asked the Minister for education the number of boards of management of national schools in County Meath that have made applications to the Department for financial assistance under the following headings in 1983: (a) new schools; (b) extensions; (c) general maintenance; their locations in the county; and the amount of such finance that has been paid during 1983.

General maintenance work in national schools does not attract specific grants: such work is the responsibility of boards of management and the capitation grand paid to national schools is intended to be applied in part for this purpose.

A list of the applications to my Department in 1983 from boards of management of national schools in County Meath for financial assistance under the headings (a) new schools and (b) extensions is being compiled and will be forwarded to the Deputy.

The Commissioners of Public Works are responsible for arrangements for carrying out works in respect of which my Department has sanctioned building grants, and for actual payment when works have been satisfactorily carried out.
