Vol. 347 No. 1

Written Answers. - Fertiliser Imports.

222.

asked the Minister for Industry, Trade, Commerce and Tourism if he is aware of the concern amongst workers in NET, Arklow, County Wicklow, about the importation of calcium ammonium nitrate from Sweden at £80 per tonne, which is £40 per tonne below Swedish domestic prices; and the steps he is taking to prevent the dumping of fertilisers on the Irish market which is putting jobs at risk in NET, Arklow.

I have received representations concerning cheap imports of calcium ammonium nitrate from Sweden. The question of any action to counter dumping is the responsibility of the European Communities and the EEC Commission examines complaints in consultation with the member states. Officials of my Department are available to assist firms in the preparation of such complaints. It would not be appropriate for me to disclose the content of discussions between my Department and NET on this matter.
