Vol. 347 No. 6

Written Answers. - County Galway Capital Projects.

190.

asked the Taoiseach if he will give full details in respect of County Galway of all capital projects to be funded by his Department in 1984.

There are no capital projects funded out of the Vote for my Department.

191.

asked the Minister for Energy if he will give full details in respect of County Galway of all capital projects to be funded by his Department in 1984.

My Department's Vote provides for the funding of three capital projects from which County Galway is likely to benefit in 1984. They are:

1. Western Aid Electrification (FEOGA)

The provision in this year's Vote is £1.87 million. The amount to be expended from the Vote will represent 80% of the total cost of the work done and half of this amount will be recouped from the EEC. The scheme is designed to stimulate the development of agriculture in the west of Ireland through the connection of farms to the electricity supply.

2. Grants for Private Bog Development

The provision in this year's Vote is £1 million. The scheme is administered by Bord na Mona and provides for payment of grants to individuals, qualified groups or societies towards the cost of private bog development for the production of turf for fuel.

3. New and Renewable Sources of Energy

The provision in this year's Vote is £97,000. The bulk of this year's expenditure will be on maintaining and monitoring the windpower programme and on monitoring the small hydro generators.

4. Expenditure in Co. Galway

It would be impossible to state what the expenditure in County Galway will amount to in 1984 in respect of 1 and 2 above. Specific allocations are not made in respect of individual counties and the amount spent in County Galway will depend on the incidence of applications received and processed during the year. In 1983 expenditure in County Galway amounted to £400,000 approx. on the FEOGA scheme and £55,383 on the private bog development scheme.

As regards 3 above, my Department expects to spend approx. £20,000 on the wind turbine on Inis Oirr in 1984. This money will be spent on repairs, modification and general upkeep of the machine which was erected in 1982 as part of the national windpower demonstration programme.
