, Limerick East): In February, 1982, my Department purchased premises at Merchants Road, Galway, for the purpose of leasing them at a nominal rent to a local voluntary committee for use as a training centre for youths on probation from the courts. The premises need substantial renovation and adaptation and I have provided funds to enable this work to proceed in 1984.
Work has been halted on this project because of some local objections. In October last I met representatives of Galway Corporation and I agreed to postpone the work until the New Year to allow Galway Corporation to propose alternative suitable premises in the centre city area. I understand that very recently the corporation have adopted some resolutions in relation to the matter and I shall be considering them in due course.
