Vol. 347 No. 9

Written Answers. - Finance Company Collapses.

307.

asked the Minister for Industry, Trade, Commerce and Tourism the total number of finance companies that have collapsed, have been liquidated or that have been put in receivership over the past year; the names of the companies; the number of investors affected; the amount of money lost to investors; the amount of tax revenue lost to the State as a result of these problems; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The only record of company liquidations and receiverships is that maintained by the Registrar of Companies pursuant to the Companies Acts. According to these records, a number of companies which went into liquidation or receivership in the past year had among their main objects activities normally associated with finance companies but it is not known to what extent these companies were, in fact, trading as finance companies at all. In these circumstances it is not possible to provide the detailed information sought by the Deputy.
