Vol. 347 No. 9

Written Answers. - Swimming Pools.

318.

asked the Minister for the Environment the number of proposals to construct swimming pools with his Department and their location; the money allocated from the capital budget for the construction of swimming pools; the amount of money provided in the budget for maintenance charges etc. for each completed swimming pool; and the projects he expects to commence this year.

There are seven such proposals with my Department for locations at Arklow, County Wicklow; Ballina, County Mayo; Ballybofey, County Donegal; Carlow; Carrickmacross, County Monaghan; Donaghmede, County Dublin; and Roscrea, County Tipperary. None of these proposals is at the stage where an allocation of finance can be made. The miscellaneous environmental services provision of £11,662,000 for my Department includes a provisional allocation of £500,000 for the construction of swimming pools. Maintenance costs of swimming pools have traditionally been met from local sources but loan charges payable by local authorities on swimming pools qualify for State subsidy of 50 per cent. It is estimated that the subsidy payable by my Department in 1984 will amount to £360,500. I cannot say at this stage what projects may commence in 1984.
