Vol. 347 No. 9

Written Answers. - Arranmore Island (Donegal) School Facilities.

440.

asked the Minister for Education if, in order to assist in the preservation of the Irish language and to alleviate the hardship endured by children on Arranmore Island, County Donegal, who have to board in schools on the mainland, she will consider assisting the provision of post-primary school facilities for children in the 12-15 age group.

In view of the relatively small number of school children on the island, it would not be feasible to establish a second-level school with an adequate curriculum to cater for the varying aptitudes and abilities of all the pupils. The schools on the mainland are in a position to offer them such a curriculum. Education through Irish is available in some schools on the mainland.
