The Government's decision to place the development officer scheme on a permanent footing was conveyed by my Department to Voluntary Service International on 29 November 1983. Arrangements for the allocation and funding of development officer posts on a permanent basis are being worked out by my Department in the context of submissions made by youth organisations involved in the scheme.
Pending a final decision on these arrangements my Department have informed Voluntary Service International that it is prepared to support on a provisional basis the post allocated to that organisation which has been vacant since the end of November 1983.
