Vol. 347 No. 12

Written Answers. - Shell Fisheries Protection.

376.

asked the Minister for Fisheries and Forestry the action he is taking to protect the shell fisheries at Kilkerrin Bay and Bertra Buí Bay, Connemara, County Galway; and if a prohibition on fishing for certain species is in operation.

I am considering a proposal for a closure by-law for escallops and oysters in Kilkerrin and Bertra Buí Bays and I propose to issue a public notice shortly indicating my intention to introduce such a bye-law. The only existing restrictions in relation to shellfishing in Kilkerrin and Bertra Buí bays relate to oysters, to which a national close season and minimum size applies, and escallops, to which a minimum size applies.
