Vol. 347 No. 12

Written Answers. - Literacy Courses.

488.

asked the Minister for Education the position regarding the provision of adult literacy courses in Dublin city.

There are a number of organisations providing tuition in adult literacy in Dublin city. The City of Dublin Vocational Education Committee, through its adult education programme, offers tuition in many of its schools. The Dublin Literacy Scheme, which is organised by the Dublin Institute of Adult Education, receives an annual grant from the City of Dublin Vocational Education Committee, towards adult literacy provision. In addition, the People's College, which receives a grant-in-aid from my Department, includes adult literacy in its programme of adult education courses. The Department of the Environment, through the Inner City Group, provides financial support for the inner-city literacy project which is administered by the City of Dublin Vocational Education Committee.

489.

asked the Minister for Education the result of the inner-city literacy project which is funded by the inner-city group and administered by the City of Dublin Vocational Education Committee with special reference to: (a) how the grant of £50,000 was allocated; (b) the number of adults trained as tutors; and (c) how many were from the city centre; and if she will give details of (d) the resource centre which was established and (e) the proposed follow-up.

Financial aid for the Inner City Group Project, administered by the City of Dublin Vocational Education Committee, is provided by the Department of the Environment. I am not, accordingly, in a position to supply the Deputy with the information requested by him.
