60,700 tonnes of beef were bought into intervention in 1983. The cost of storage, handling, deboning and ancillary services is estimated at £13.13 million (excluding VAT) of which an estimated £12.13 million is recouped by the EEC. The balance of £1 million is borne by the Exchequer which also has to meet a further £5.5 million in respect of financing costs.
