Vol. 348 No. 5

Written Answers. - Marital Problems.

529.

asked the Minister for Justice the total cost of the family court system, law centres and other Government financed agencies based on an adversarial approach to the solution of marital problems in Ireland.

Limerick East): Cases arising from marital problems are dealt with in all courts. It would not be possible to separate the cost of providing for these cases from the overall cost of the courts. The Legal Aid Board's law centres are not confined to the provision of legal services for family law actions. The board have informed me that no breakdown can be provided to show the cost of the law centres attributable to such actions. There is no other comparable service for which I have responsibility.

530.

asked the Minister for Justice if the Government have any plans to introduce a compulsory reconciliation system which would have to be operated in advance of any spouse seeking a barring order, or other legal action.

531.

asked the Minister for Justice if he is satisfied with the workings of the barring order system; and whether any changes are proposed.

Limerick East): I propose to take Questions Nos. 530 and 531 together.

For reasons which have been explained in this House on a number of occasions already, I could not undertake to indicate, by way of reply to parliamentary questions, what specific legislative proposals I might have in a particular area. Any proposals I may have in relation to the subject matter of these questions will be announced in the ordinary way in due course.

532.

asked the Minister for Justice if there is any information available on those spouses who are barred from their homes, who succeeded in obtaining alternative accommodation, or if there is any follow-up in this regard after the barring order is given.

Limerick East): There is no such information available in my Department. The Deputy will appreciate that the provision of accommodation is not a matter that comes within the area of responsibility of my Department.
