asked the Minister for Labour the conditions and hourly rates of pay of office cleaners used in his Department; and whether such cleaners are directly employed by his Department or by an outside agency.

Cleaning in my Department is carried out by three categories of cleaners viz. full-time cleaners, part-time cleaners and contract cleaners.

Full-time cleaners

There are full-time office cleaners employed in the headquarters and one local office of my Department in a temporary unestablished capacity. They are conditioned to a 42 hour working week and their rate of pay if £106.61 per week.

Part-time cleaners

There are part-time cleaners employed by my Department in 12 local offices around the country at an hourly rate of pay of £2.795.

Contract cleaners

My Department employs the services of contract cleaning firms in 23 offices of the Department—mainly local offices. In each of these cases, the Department have a contract with the cleaning firm which, in turn, employs the workers.
