Written Answers. - Cleaners' Pay.

asked the Taoiseach the conditions and hourly rates of pay of office cleaners used in his Department; and whether such cleaners are directly employed by his Department or by an outside agency.

The Department of the Taoiseach directly employ one superintendent of cleaners and 19 cleaning staff. Details of their rates of pay and conditions of service are as follows:

(a) Unestablished position as Cleaner in the Department of the Taoiseach

(i) Pay:—The pay at present is £106.61 per week.

(ii) Annual Leave:—Annual leave is 18 working days a year. This leave is on the basis of a five-day week and is exclusive of the usual public holidays.

(iii) Hours of Attendance:— Hours of attendance are as fixed from time to time. At present they are 30 hours a week, but may increase at any time up to 42 hours.

(iv) General:—Appointments are subject to the Civil Service Regulation Acts, 1956 and 1958, and all other Acts relating to the civil service.

(v) Tenure:—Appointments are temporary and may be terminated at any time in accordance with the Minimum Notice and Terms of Employment Act, 1973. In the case of misconduct an officer's employment may be terminated at any time without notice and without cause being given. Retirement is compulsory at 65 years of age.

(vi) Duties:— Officers are required to perform any duties assigned from time to time as appropriate to the position.

(vii) Headquarters:—Officer's headquarters are such as may be designated from time to time by the Head of the Department; when absent from home and headquarters on duty officers are paid appropriate travelling expenses and subsistence allowances.

(viii) Outside Employment:— The position is wholetime and officers may not be connected with any outside business which would interfere with the performance of official duties.

(ix) Sick Leave:—Pay during illness may be allowed as follows in any period of 12 months: After 3 months service — up to 6 weeks with full pay; After 6 months service — up to 9 weeks with full pay; After 12 months service — up to 13 weeks with full pay. The amount of any benefits payable under the Social Welfare Acts is deducted from these payments during illness.

(x) Pension:— The position is pensionable in accordance with the terms of the non-Contributory Pension Scheme for Non-Established State Employees.

(b) Unestablished position of Superintendent of Cleaners in the Department of the Taoiseach.

The pay scale for the post is £110.02, £112.28, £113.62, £114.92, £117.67, per week and the remaining conditions of service are as for the unestablished position of cleaner.
