The functions of my Department were the subject of four changes since 1977 and some confusion arose in the minds of the public as to where certain functions resided. The decision made some months ago to reunite the functions of Industry with those of Trade, Commerce and Tourism made it necessary to incorporate Industry in the former title of "Trade, Commerce and Tourism".
While a shorter title might have been more appropriate it was decided to use the present title at least for a while to avoid any further confusion. The Deputy will appreciate that many other functions reside in my Department which are not specifically mentioned in the title. These include price control, competition policy, company law, insurance and science and technology.
