Vol. 348 No. 11

Written Answers. - Cleaners' Pay.

407.

asked the Minister for Defence the conditions and hourly rates of pay of office cleaners used in his Department; and whether such cleaners are directly employed by his Department or by an outside agency.

Office cleaners are recruited directly by my Department and are appointed to unestablished positions which are subject to the Civil Service Regulation Acts, 1956 and 1958, and to all other Acts relating to the Civil Service. The employment is pensionable, remuneration is on a weekly basis — present rate £106.61 per week — and normal attendance is 30 hours per week.

Cleaners are also employed directly as civilian employees under the authority of the Defence Act, 1954 for full-time and part-time work in certain military locations. In the case of those engaged on a full-time basis their conditions of employment are similar to those of their Civil Service counterparts. Part-time cleaners are remunerated at the rate of £2.79 per hour and attendance varies between six and 18 hours per week.
