Vol. 348 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Garda Training.

14.

asked the Minister for Justice the plans he has to improve both the basic and in-service training for gardaí; the additional resources he is making available for this purpose; and when any improved arrangements will be put into operation.

(Limerick East): Certain proposals relating to the review and improvement of Garda training generally are at present under discussion but I am not in a position to make any public statement about the matter at this stage.

The resources provided for Garda training are adequate to meet all requirements.

Is the Minister telling us that the funds provided for Garda training are adequate to meet all immediate requirements?

(Limerick East): Yes.

I have to disagree with the Minister. Garda training has been cut back quite severely. Would the Minister not agree that the Garda themselves are looking for basic training courses and the reintroduction of courses which were cut down during his period of office last year as part of the cutbacks?

(Limerick East): I have said that certain proposals relating to the review and improvement of Garda training generally are at present under discussion. I have also said that there are adequate resources for Garda training to meet requirements at present. There has not been any cutback in the basic training of gardaí in Templemore.

I would ask the Minister to look at his records. While there may not be any change in the categories of training, he will find that people have not been sent on training courses during the past year as they would normally have been.
