Vol. 348 No. 12

Written Answers. - Social Welfare Officers' Training.

405.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare if he will introduce a new training course for social welfare officers, particularly regarding assessment for small holders unemployment assistance; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Social welfare officers receive both formal training courses and on-the-job training during the first two years of assignment and the assessment of means from all sources, including farming, forms an important part of this training.

The assessment of the means of farmers for social welfare purposes has always been an important element of the work of the outdoor staff and this is continually reviewed and up-dated by means of on-the-job instruction and guidance from superior officers. A special course for the purpose of assessing the means of small holders is not considered necessary.
