Vol. 349 No. 3

Written Answers. - Building Society Shares.

477.

asked the Minister for the Environment if he will bring forward emergency legislation to ensure that financial institutions cannot purchase building society shares; if he will make a ministerial order to ensure that shares already purchased by the Bank of Ireland from the Irish Civil Service Building Society will not be accepted in law; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I would refer the Deputy to the replies given by the Minister for Finance, on 6 and 14 March, to Private Notice Questions about the possible acquisition by a bank or other organisation of a controlling interest in the Irish Civil Service Building Society. The matter is still being considered by the Government and the question of special legislation does not arise at this stage.
