Vol. 349 No. 3

Written Answers. - Salmon Fishing.

480.

asked the Minister for Fisheries and Forestry if, in view of the vast over-fishing of salmon on the west coast of Ireland, he will agree to extend the salmon season by at least two weeks on the south-east and east coast to allow a semblance of parity to all fishermen.

I have recently given very careful consideration to the salmon fishing measures to operate in 1984. On 8 March I announced details of the changes to apply. In making these changes I took into account the various interests involved as well as the need to conserve our salmon stocks. Since making the announcement I have received representations on the point raised in the question and I am looking into the matter.
