Vol. 349 No. 3

Written Answers. - Youth Employment Grants.

578.

asked the Minister for Labour the reasons applications from golf clubs for youth employment grants are not being sanctioned; the number of such applications received in 1983 and 1984 to date; the specific number and details of applications received from clubs in County Galway; the reasons for the long delay; the date on which these applications will be sanctioned; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The Youth Employment Scheme makes grants available for the employment of young people on desirable community works of a type which would not otherwise be undertaken in the normal course at the present time.

All applications from golf clubs or other groups are considered on the merits of the project proposed in relation to the scope of the scheme. An important consideration is whether or not the project could be carried out by the organisation concerned from its own resources.

The number of applications received from golf clubs in 1983 was 26, of which 22 were sanctioned. To date 14 applications have been received in 1984 of which three have been sanctioned.

In 1983, four applications were received from golf clubs in County Galway. Two of these were sanctioned, one was rejected and the other was inspected on Thursday, 22 March last. A decision in this case will be made shortly.

Two applications were received from golf clubs in County Galway in 1984. Both of these applications were inspected last week and decisions will also be made shortly.

Inspections are carried out with the least possible delay. To reduce administration costs, applications in a particular area are grouped for inspection purposes and, in these circumstances, it may take some time following the original submission of an application before an official can visit a particular project.
