Vol. 349 No. 5

Written Answers. - AnCO (Wexford) Welding Section.

465.

asked the Minister for Labour if there is any proposal to close down the welding section of the AnCO Training Centre in Wexford; if so the reason; if he is aware of the number of applicants for such courses in Wexford and the need for such localised service as the only other alternative is in Waterford for which there is a very long waiting list; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The current welding course at the AnCO temporary training centre in Wexford is due to end on 12 May 1984. AnCO consider that the number of people trained by that date will be sufficient to meet the estimated needs of local industry for the foreseeable future and that the continuation of the welding course on a permanent basis could not, therefore, be justified.

AnCO will use the 26 training places involved for a range of training courses, which will include the provision of welding courses from time to time. AnCO will continue to monitor training needs in the Wexford area, in consultation with local industry and the Industrial Development Authority.

Finally, I would refer the Deputy to a written reply given by me to Question No. 473 by Deputy Avril Doyle on 22 March 1984.
